The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Abiene Larkin

In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a sailor pays the consequences when he meets death out at sea and surrenders all of his crewmates to death because of his fear. As well as, the mariner's reckless actions when he kills the albatross who curses him shortly after his death. In this epic poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, tells a story about a mariner who goes out to sea and has many adventures. For example, meeting death and having it kill all of his crewmates out in the dense grey fog. The ancient mariner committed a terrible crime when he killed the albatross, one of the god’s loving creatures. Many things he learned from that experience was understanding that everything God made is important, even when it's bad or good it has its place in the world and accepts them for who they are.

While out at sea the Ancient Mariner finds himself at an intersection when stumbling upon the ghost ship captain who challenged him to fight or surrender which will place the lives of his crewmates at risk. “The many men, so beautiful! And they all died did lie: And a thousand thousand slimy things Lived on; and so did I.” Looking out in the distance they found a scary ship all bony and moldy while standing on top a ghost-like woman wanting for the Mariners crew. But instead of the Mariner fighting for their lives and freedom all the Mariner did was “rais a white flag” saying we surrender.  Soon after ghosts from beneath the sea came upon the ship and killed all of the Mariners' mates but leaving only him with pain and sorrow while the crew lay on the deck staring at him with chills running through the mariner’s body.

At the start of his voyage, the mariner doesn't think through his actions. Soon after his journey out at sea, the Ancient Mariner had a course that made him speak to anyone in his path. He now has the urge to do so.“It is an ancient Mariner, And he stoppeth one of three.” Only from hearing the Mariner’s triumphs and failures did wedding guest learn that doing wrong has consequences.

When the Ancient Mariner disappeared and left the man. He remembered his story, how he went on a voyage. Because he was careless while he kills the bird, sacrificed his crewmates all because he was scared, still got a course to tell all of this. “A sadder and a wiser man, He rose the morrow morn.” Because of his course to tell people his journey the man finally knew why and instead of banging his chest and crying out loud all he did was sit there in sadness while he became wiser.

In summary, my thesis was “The Ancient Mariner learns many things like understanding his consequences from his mistake.” but throughout the Ancient Mariners journey, we have learned that when having non-consequential thinking it can lead to many bad things like losing crewmates, killing things for no such reason, and more. But we have also learned that it's good to hear for other people to become a better person over time as well as work on mistakes we have made in the past.
